Rsyslog versus Grep

Postby jbl » Sat Apr 08, 2017 12:27 am

I am using grep on syslog files with php to parse them and insert data into mysql, would you be so kind as to telling me, what would be the advantage of using Rsyslog instead (performance -> why ?,...) ?

performance in that the C code in rsyslog is going to be far faster than your shell script pipeline. Also, rsyslog can insert multiple records at one time, it can deal with the database becoming unresponsive, and a fair number of other conditions.

It will also have far less latency as it does not require the logs first get written to disk and then read (this also can significantly reduce disk I/O and the resulting performance impact).
