LogAnalyzer refused to read syslog despite perms

Postby whit » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:07 pm

Getting the complaint "No syslog records found - Error Details: Syslog file is not readable, read access may be denied." Apache is running as www-data. I've added www-data to the adm group, which as read permission on /var/log/syslog. I can su to www-data and see /var/log/syslog as that user.

# ls -lrt /var/log/syslog
-rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 6226113 2012-06-06 10:06 /var/log/syslog

www-data@obscured:/var/log$ head syslog
Jun 6 06:55:52 obscured syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart.

Where should I look for the real problem?

Note: Theres no selinux or the like on the system.

Now, if I set syslog to 666 perms it's read. But 640 should work, unless LogAnalyzer is trying to read it as a user other than www-data? But how and why would it?

Have you made www-data user a member of the adm group?
If not I do not see how Loganalyzer will be able to access the logfile properly.
