Leading Practices - Rules For Monitoring My Small Network

Postby rarenet » Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:59 am

All:

I hope you can help me as I am a newbie to network monitoring and administration.

What I am looking to do is to create a base set of rules to monitor my network. I have not been able to find anything that provides leading practices regarding what type of rules to create.

I am not looking for anything too difficult as I will not be looking to monitor the network on a full time basis. I am looking to ensure if any data or other type of information of attempt is made unlawfully into the network, that I have some sort of available proof.

Regards,

- Mike

Hi,

we do have a few articles about centralized monitoring online, here are some links:
http://www.monitorware.com/common/en/ar ... _mysql.php

Lot's of StepByStep articles can be found here:
http://www.monitorware.com/common/en/stepbystep/
Some of them are older but still work with current versions of our products.

For small networks we also have a desktop based application to monitor network services locally called AliveMon. A trial Version can be downloaded here:

best regards,
