This is the place for you, if you got rsyslog up and running but wonder how to make it do what you want.

"InputFilePollInterval" time problem

Postby poilkj » Tue Aug 01, 2017 8:30 am

hello,
I want the rsyslog service imfile modul read the test.log in 60 minutes periodic.
I set $InputFilePollInterval parameter = 3600
But the service read the log file with default parameter (10 sec)
I do not understand. There is no such other parameter elsewhere. (intevall)

---------------------------
$ModLoad imfile
$InputFilePollInterval 3600
$InputFileName /tmp/test.log
$InputFileTag weblogic-umi
$InputFileStateFile /tmp/test.state
$InputFilePersistStateInterval 3600
$InputFileSeverity info
$InputFileFacility local5
$InputRunFileMonitor

local5.* /var/log/output.log
& ~
-------------------------------------
debug information: every 10 sec read to file:
1023.382478627:7f98b206a700: stream checking for file change on '/tmp/test.log', inode 914307/914307file 6 read 0 bytes
1033.392843736:7f98b206a700: stream checking for file change on '/tmp/test.log', inode 914307/914307file 6 read 0 bytes
1043.402952674:7f98b206a700: stream checking for file change on '/tmp/test.log', inode 914307/914307file 6 read 0 bytes

rsyslog version: 5.8

I check the rsyslog 8.x version, but there is also the same situation. (=user error, no bug)

thanks,
steven

Please try using the input() format with a reasonably current 8.x version

hi,
unfortunately, i am using: OS release: Oracle Linux Server release 6.8, and rsyslog release: 5.8.

The old rsyslog in version 5 don't know the format: input(type="imfile"....
:(

In that case, you need to contact your OS vendor for support, we only try to provide community support for current version, so if you are only going to run the version your OS vendor provides, you need to go to them for support.

Even if we found and fixed a problem, it wouldn't do you any good, and you wouldn't be able to test it as long as you are sticking with the vendor version.

Heureka,

SOLVED:
this is correct sequence:

$InputRunFileMonitor
$InputFilePollInterval 20

this is bad , when InputRunFileMonitor is after the InputFilePollInterval, in this case it uses default parameter (10 sec)

$InputFilePollInterval 20
$InputRunFileMonitor

thanks

This sort of confusion is why the new style config is recommended for more complex setups, there are all sorts of gotchas in the legacy config.

Glad you solved your problem. Check that your OS provider doesn't offer you a newer version of rsyslog in their backports repo or similar.
