Good to hear that it works again.
Somehow the TCP/IP Stack must have been trashed :-/!

You are the second one with such a problem this week (one of my m8's had a similar problem a few days ago).
I have a last question, do you directly connect to the Internet?

i had some kind of this problem, too! At the beginning of this week, i installed VMware WS 4 on my system! After rebooting the machine i had problems with my internet connection! i logged in to my internet-povider successfully, but the browser couldn't show a website! always "Page can't be displayed"! Messengers like MSN and ICQ didn't work, too! Also Outlook coldn't connect to a mailserver! It was very confusing, cause my internet-connection was established and it said that there were data transferred! but no programm that used the internet-connection could "talk outside"!
Deactivate of the VMware network-connections didn't help!
Also deinstalling of VMware didn't work, so i resored my system like alorbach said (with F8 suring startup) to a point before installing VMware and all was fine!

I'm wondering about, what this error was! TCP/IP broken? I don't know...

Greetings,

ahofmann!

Via an ADSL router ( Vigor 2600 ) - though only for 4 days until the problems started. Before that I was using ISDN. I suspect the removal of a Network Bridge between Firewire and Ethernet ports did it ( because a similar thing happened to a colleague who removed a bridge ).

Thanks again

Today Microsoft revised 3 Security patches because of a few problems with the old security patches. Possible your problem was related to these security patches  .

Same prob

Postby Rahul » Thu Jan 29, 2004 7:48 pm

Hi my frnds
Even I have the same prob.
It actually occured when I installed S4f Filter Pack after that whenever I tried to open any webpage using any Broser (IE, Netscape, Opera) the preference dialog box of the Software comes up.
The Speciality of the software is that u cannot uninstall it.
Any how i tried to delete the files from Program files folder as well as from \\Systemfolder\system.
In my case \\Systemfolder\System had 3 files i.e. Filter7.dll, SPORDER.DLL, WINS4F.DLL.
This was all I could do about the Software. I am still doin R&D on it.
May be it wil help u.
Note: Before instaling software think twice
U will get the software from s4f.com

Hi all,
I came across this forum while searching for an error message. Today, I installed the software utility and drivers for a wireless USB card made by
Syntax and after rebooting the computer (running windows XP), it can't get an IP address. The error messages are: "The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized" for wired connection and "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" for wireless connection. Might be something to do with my McAfee virus scanner.

No problem with the wireless router as another computer is able to obtain IP address. Looks like I need to try the method given in Knowledge base article 817571.

I'd hate to do a fresh install as I have tons of software installed on it! Has anybody figured out what is the best way to restore TCP/IP software in case a third party has corrupted the stack?

thanks!

OK! The second part of method 1 in article 817571 worked :-)

Fixed: Requested service provider could not be loaded

Postby Paul » Sat Sep 04, 2004 5:32 am

I have a laptop running Windows XP that was initially very slow accessing the Internet, then wouldn't load parts of pages, and eventually started reporting "Requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized" when trying to ftp or telnet from the cmd prompt.

This all seemed to start around the time that Norton Internet Security downloaded an automatic update to a DLL, but failed when installing the new DLL.

I uninstalled NIS, but no improvement. I also tried applying XP SP2, but no help.

I came across this forum whilst searching for an answer, and I applied Method 1 of Knowledge Base Article 817571 (as suggested by Guest on 28 Oct 2003), and it now works perfectly.

Thanks,

Paul

corrupted Winsocks

Postby bulok » Sun Dec 26, 2004 6:00 pm

Here's my quick fix for this.

1) Remove winsock and winsock2 from registry editor.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2) Restart PC. When it boots it should tell you TCP/IP is not installed.

3) Go to Network connections and Right click their connection. Choose Properties.

4). Click Install

5). Click Protocol, then click Add

6) Click Have Disk. Type C:\Windows\inf . Choosing browse on the C: prompt won't work since it won't be listed there.

7). On the list available choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click OK

That's it. There shouldn't be anymore restart involved so try to see if they can get online. If not then a reboot should work.
