Win 2K server without DNS

Postby des on Thu Dec 04, 2003 8:44 pm

My company just purchased a new server and would like to replace and old NT 4.0(PDC) box, however, we do not support DNS but we do have WINS service running on the NT 4.0 (PDC).

Can I still install the AD on the Win2k server without the DDNS and just use the WINS service ?

Also, will there be a problem if I have two severs, one with NT 4.0 and the other Win2K, running WINS service on the same network?

Keep in mind I still have to do the migration of users. :?:

You need DNS, but it does not need to be MS DNS. If you use another DNS, be prepared for a lengthy setup (and you need to have lots of knowledge in this regard). So for your setup, I think MS DDNS is still the best option.

wins

On a similar topic, I have a WIN2K server box that is being used as
a workstation (it is running advance server to take advantage of a
SMP motherboard, the plain WIN2K didn't recognise all the CPUs).

Naturally, I don't want it serving DHCP, DNS nor WINS, those services
are being served from a dedicated server. So I turn off DHCP server,
DNS server and turn on the respective clients, I naturally get an
error from WINS server. So I turn that off too. So now I get a different
error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: WINSCTRS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4314
Date: 11/15/2003
Time: 10:43:23 AM
User: N/A
Computer: RENDER
Description:
WINS Performance Monitor Counters could not get the WINS statistics.

Any ideas how to fix this? I haven't found squat related to this
event ID. Thanks.
