To segment ASCII files when they reach a certain size

Postby JVillegas » Tue Feb 22, 2005 4:32 pm

We have a WIN 2K SERVER with the product WinSyslog 5.3 installed.
The received logs are stored on the hard disk in ASCII files. I need to segment these files when they reach a certain size (Example: 50 MB). The new files must add in his name a sequential number.

For example:
C:\SL\source-YYYY-MM-DD 1.log
C:\SL\source-YYYY-MM-DD 2.log
C:\SL\source-YYYY-MM-DD 3.log
.
.
.
.
C:\SL\source-YYYY-MM-DD n.log

For security reasons, I cannot use circular logging.

Thanks a lot,

Hi,

thanks for your posting. At the Moment it is unfortunately not possible to split files after a period of time. But this is a very reasonable feature we will add into the next major version of WinSyslog and the current *almost ready* Version of MonitorWare Agent 3.0.

But I am sorry we have no release data for the next major WinSyslog release yet, but if you like to test this new feature you can try the new MWAgent Beta Version soon (The feature is currently being implemented).

best regards,

Hello Andre, thank you very much.

Please, let me understand you. Must we use the new MWAgent Version in combination with the WinSyslog 5.3? Or, must we use only the new MWAgent Version?

Thanks,

What Andre suggest is that you use MonitorWare Agent instead of WinSyslog. MonitorWare Agent is a kind of "super-WinSyslog". It has everything that WinSyslog has, plus more. Also, the configuration interface is the same. The beta does not require a license key, so you can use it for the time being. Once a new WinSyslog version has been created based on the recent MonitorWare Agent build, you can switch back to WinSyslog.

I hope that clarifies.
