This thread is about testing rsyslog for non-western character sets like Japanese or Chinese. We have asked for volunteers capable of doing so. Here is the description of what need to be done:

- download rsyslog, build and install it on your system:

- run it while receiving messages from the local system and/or remote ones

- check recorded log files for readability

This may sound pretty basic, but the rsyslog team currently has no clue whether or not messages are received and written correctly. We assume they are, but we do not know for sure. This is why we request your feedback. And should we see any issues, we will probably ask you to run some debug version and providing us with a debug log, so that we can fix it. Of course, all testers will be heavily supported and receive all due honor s .

Please note that rsyslog does not currently support character set conversion (like receiving messages in SJIS and storing them in EIS). We are right now at a very basic level. Depending on the community, most importantly tester base and suggestions received, we will gladly add features.

Please use this thread for any questions and/or test results. Also, feel free to open new threads if that is (or seems) more appropriate.

I installed rsyslogd and it's running. I've checked my /var/log/syslog file and it's up and running.

What I need to know is how I get system messages in Japanese to get sent to rsyslog. My system is setup for Japanese, but I use it for filenames mostly.

I just wanted to add that by now I have received a report of syslog messages being written with valid Japanese characters. As it looks, the current version supports Japanes fine. This is also most probably true for other non-western scripts. Any further testing is still appreciated.

I also installed rsyslog to my Fedora 7. It's fine with Japanese characters.

That's good to hear . Could you try to turn on

$EscapeControlCharactersOnReceive on

in rsyslog.conf (details about this option here in the manual).

I think that option will break Japanese characters, but so far could not verify that in practice.

I am just wondering I could get some help cause to this topic is quite long.

I am testing the rsyslog 3.22.0 stable version with KOREAN Language but it shows me wrong characters.
Currently, I am using MySQL 5 and CentOS 5.3 with UTF-8.
below two options are not effective on my environment.

$EscapeControlCharactersOnReceive on
$EscapeControlCharactersOnReceive off

It shows me like as below.
Correct Korean char : 한글 테스트
MySQL SELECT QUERY GET : ÇÑ±Û Å×½ºÆ®
and system messages (/var/log/messages) : �ѱ� �׽�Ʈ-

And I configured as below.
./configure --prefix=/home/syslog --enable-mysql --sysconfdir=/home/conf --libdir=/home/syslog/lib --includedir=/home/mysql/include

Am I missing something??
Please let me know how to do?
