I'm a newbie, so please bear with me. My boss wants me to set up an SQL server, but I've never done anything with SQL before. How easy is it to learn? What's the method, learn by doing or getting a book? Also, the company has copies of SQL Server 2000 & 2005. While I would naturally want to install 2005, is there an advantage to going with 2000 instead? What's the difference? Thanks!

As far as I know MS SQL 2005 is more XML driven and offers some new features. If you really need them depends on what your boss needs.
Also search for "Microsoft sql 2000 2005 comparison" for more on google.

I wouldn't buy a book to learn more about MS SQL, I would first try public sources like wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SQL_Server
