Unable to Logon to Windows 2003 Domain Due to Windows xpCann

Postby virtthemaest on Wed Jan 31, 2007 2:03 am

Hi, I’m new to this forum
I have just created my first Domain controller in win2k3 by following the "dcpromo command” every thing looks good.
I created 2 users in the “Active directory and computers” (1, test1) (2, test2) following that I removed the 2 XP computers from workstations and joined the new domain test.com (test) (sorry for my vague explanation)

Then, I logged on to the domain controller using user account authentication “test1” on XPPC1 (name of 1st XP machine pc (XPPC1)
Successful. Then the same for test2 on XPPC2 (name of 2nd XP machine)
In a few minutes I’m logged in ready to ping Domain controller successfully. Works great!

Which comes to my main problem I logged off both machines and try to log on to XPPC1 using the test2’s Authentication
I also try to log onto XPPC2 using test1’s Authentication.
I get an error!! The domain cannot be found???? Why does it work visa versa tho?

But I joined the domain before hand and I can see the domain name in the drop down box in the authentication screen, I created the users in Active directory and computers. And selected them to connect to all computers, and then adding both computer names.

What have I done wrong????

Please help I would appreciate any answers.

Hello there,

The first thing you must do is check both workstations, what i mean here is check that they can both resolve the domain name. ping dc1.mydoamin.com dc1 would be the name of your domain controller.

If you get a reply back then at least you know that DNS is working correctly.

2. Check both the suer accounts you are logging in with and the computer accounts making sure they have not been disabled or deleted.

3. Check the time zones on all machines, this can sometimes cause a login problem.

4. Login into the DC with the accounts and make sure the accounts work.

Your getting domain can not be found which tends to mean the workstations are unable to resolve the domain name.

5. If you are using static Ip address then make sure all machines are on the same IP subnet.

6. Can all machines ping each other using their IP addresses?

If they can't and you are using DHCP move to static IP address on all boxes. All DC's should be set to use static IP anyway.

let me know how you go on. Les.
