A friend an I were given a Dell Poweredge 2650 http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/2650_specs.pdf , and we want to set it up at one of our houses and allow remote access, so we can both access and control it from anywhere. It is running Windows Server 2003 Standard.
We both have basic knowledge of what we need to do. The only other servers we have setup have been for our school. We just learn as we go.
1. The first question we have is: There are 3 RJ45 ports. Two are nic cards, but what is the third one? It has a picture of a wrench below it.
2. The second question is: We understand we need to connect it directly to the modem, but we want to also run a wireless router off of it. First, at his house when the modem is connected directly to the server the speed drops to a 10mbps connection and it won't establish an IP. Are there any good reasons for that to happen? I think it's probably just a modem/ISP thing. Second, should we try to run dhcp through the server or just leave that to the router?
3. Third questions is: What else do we need to do to setup remote access? What type of remote access do we install? User accounts? Other server roles? Will we be able to remotely install programs and do other Administrative activities?
