Connecting equip - config server

Postby Steelhorse on Wed Apr 05, 2006 12:51 am

I know this is going to be pretty basic compared to the other topics in here but although I am a computer tech and work with 2003 Server I haven't setup one up start to finish.
My first question is where to connect my server, here is what I have:
( This is all in a equipment rack in the garage )
Cable modem - Time Warner Road Runner
Linksys 4 port router
Cisco 3500 12 port switch

( In the house ) ( Cat 5e run to all rooms )
Dlink 8 port switch in one room
Total of 4 computers

My thinking was: from the cable modem into the server (2 nics), into the router, into the 3500 switch and from there into the rest of the house. Completely backwards?
I want the server to be a DHCP server to start then I would like to use NAT, unless as soon as you set it up for DHCP you get NAT.
Thanks for any advice,
Will
