MIB's and winsyslog

Postby ricky on Thu Mar 09, 2006 8:33 am

Hi
I am using winsyslog to receive syslog message from a cisco PIX. Iwant to forward selected messages as SNMP traps to a SNMP manager. Do I need to load the relevant cisco MIB with the winssyslog application. Are there any guides I should read in relation to this task.

Thanks

Hi,

technically you do not need Cisco mibs to send snmp messages to your SNMP Manager.

In WinSyslog you can select Enterprise OID to your needs, and add variables to is as you want as well. As I do not know the SNMP Manager you are using, I suggest you just try to use the SNMP Action and generate some test messages, so you see how the messages are received.

Interesting topic.
I want to user winsyslog to receive syslog messages from a PIX, and forward selected alarms to a product called Netcool using SNMP. I think I would get more functionality by loading the PIX MIB along wiht the winsyslog application. How do I do this. Are the any guides available.

Thanks

There is a sub folder in the WinSyslog directory called "mibs". Usually it is sufficient to simply copy the mib files into this directory and restarting the Client. The PIX Mibs should then be visible in the Mib Browser.

However WinSyslog was not designed to receive and forward snmp messages one-to-one. You can receive messages, filter and process them, and create and send new SNMP messages. However it is possible to use custom mibs when creating a Forward SNMP Action, you can add and find them in the MIBBrowser as I wrote above.

I hope this helps.
