new office - need help

Postby greycb on Thu Jan 26, 2006 8:26 pm

Hello,

Im having a few problems with the best way to go to setup a satellite
office. We are opening a new location and I have purchased and built a new
server for this location. A permanent VPN connection will be put in place to
provide connectivity between the sites. One network will sit on 192.168.100.0
and the other will be 192.168.101.0

That being said, what would my best approach be? Create a new domain and
setup trusts between the domains? create a child domain? One issue is that
all of the users located in the new office already have active directory
accounts as they logon to citrix and our sharepoint servers. I would prefer
to not have to start them from scratch. Any ideas would be great. Thx

Hi there,

What you haven't told us is the link speed to the remote office. Other things to remenber is how the users in the remote office will logon if the link goes down. You need to plan your global catalog servers and DNS servers. once you have this sorted then you'll know how to configure AD for your remote site.

If you have a very fast link across both sites then I would leave both sites in a single domain, if you have a slow link then think about you replication traffic and how you can best manage it.

Other things to think about are also users who may move from site to site and who also have roaming profiles this could mean slow logon times.
