Need to set SID on a user

Postby niod@home.se on Thu Apr 03, 2003 10:36 pm

Hi!

I had a disk crach this day and was forsed to reinstall winXP prof on my hard disk. I lost some data but not much because a make backups every week. BUT! Since i had my user catalog encryptet I can't rea my files from the backup!!! Why? Because when I reinstalled WinXP I got a new SID on my user (the name and password are the same). And the SID is used as a part of the cryptations key!!!!

This sucks!

A have figured out my old SID number, but I don't know how to force that numer into a user on my new system.

Any one knows?

Best

Hi,

I assume that have used EFS to encrypt your data.
Please note that not the SID is the key part of the encryption, it is private key stored in the User profile.

So you only chance is to get you rold user profile. If you still have your old "Documents and Settings" folder saved, you can seach for NTUSER.DAT in your user profile folder.

If you found this file, I can give you further steps trying to restore your encrypted data.

But as I say, this will be the only way to get your encrypted data back :!:
