Hmmm... I MAY have stumbled upon a solution. I hope so. Accidentally, I found out that moving most of the files from C:\Documents and settings stopped the crashes. I'm currently trying to see if that's really the case and if it is, what files are responsible.

The problem is a shell extension.

Typically from an app from a previous OS version.

Here is a free utility that will show all extensions and let you disable/enable them one by one or in groups:

Using 'divide and conquer' tshoot method, I found my errant extension (old Nvidea app in my case) in under 2 minutes.
