As far as I know, this sometimes happens when an application takes up massive I/O ressources or other things that require real memory, not virtual one. Most probably, there is an application error. In most cases, the machine will automatically reboot. If you have a chance to start task manager, you should be able to see an app monopolizing the CPU.
