Init script for RHEL 4

Postby Thorgull » Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:51 pm

Hi there,

I've installed rsyslog v3.20.2 on a Red Hat EL 4 but I can't get the init script, which I found there (I've tried with a few others, found on the net as well), to work.

whenever I try to use /etc/init.d/rsyslog start|stop|reload, I get the error message : bad interpreter : no such file or directory

I've followed the HOWTO, but I can't get it to work.

Do anyone have an idea of what is wrong ?

Professional Services Information

  • Custom written rsyslog.conf?
  • Maintenance Contract?
  • Installation support?

The first line of that script is:
#!/bin/bash

Your system does not have bash at that location. Change the shell script to point to the proper location on your server (e.g, some have it at /usr/local/bin/bash, or /usr/bin/bash).

well, I had looked at this before, but bash really is at /bin/bash

I must say I do not know much about linux, even less about RHEL and init scripts, that's why I'm asking. I don't find much more ideas on the web than what I already found (maybe I'm not looking at the right place).

But thanks anyway :)

re,
a litle message to let you know that I got an init script working. took the stock syslog init script and deleted klogd references and added a "r" behind each occurence of syslog. I was not sure it would work, though :D

I just hope it won't cause any trouble ^^'

ah, that sounds like an interesting idea. I think it should work - at least from the rsylog POV ;)

I tried the script on my link with you improvments but I still have the same result.
Can't tell why. Maybe something's wrong with my install, or there are differences between RHEL4 and 5.

Thanks anyway, joe.hidden :)
