imfile, theory questions

Postby trefalgar on Fri Oct 10, 2008 10:16 pm

If imfile is configured to monitor a file that doesn't exist, does it periodically check to see if it's created for monitoring?

Syslog-NG says ...
Code: Select all
Note, however, that file( ) is not intended for use on regular text files. If you wish syslog-ng to "tail" dynamic log files written by other applications (e.g., httpd), you'll need to write a script that pipes the output from a tail -f [filename] command to logger. (For instructions on using logger, see Section 10.3 later in this chapter.)

What is rsyslog's take?

Professional Services Information

  • Custom written rsyslog.conf?
  • Maintenance Contract?
  • Installation support?

Nevermind, I did it myself :D

Rsyslog works beautifully. The file didn't exist - no errors generated. A file was created, and it was parsed.

Thanks!

Thanks :) It looks like syslog-ng and rsyslog have different preception of what a file is. In rsyslog, imfile is specifically written to support text files.

Are there any plans to add a direct support for reading from named pipes (fifo) in rsyslog ?

Not until now ;) I'll see if I can add it at least to the upcoming "sponsor list", that is features we are looking for folks who would like to sponsor development. The request have become so many I can not do everything immediately (some time I could...). So this is probably an approach to put things early in the queue that people are most interested in. If there is no sponsor, I'll probably do it anyhow, but only after the more important things (based on my POV ;)) are done first :)
