Hi all,

I have put together a first beta of the upcoming syslog appliance. The appliance is based on Ubuntu JeOS, lamp, rsyslog and phpLogCon. It runs under VMWare. The target audience is anyone who would like to have a log analysis system that runs out of the box.

Hi, i am testing this appiance on VMware Workstation 6.5.

Some issues:
- My ethernet device was renamed from eth0 to eth1 , so i manually had to issue 'dhclient eth1' on the VM's console.
- I can't seem to figure out the username/password for phpLogCon
- I can't seem to figure out the password for MySQL's root user

The phpLogCon pass is stopping me from checking it further.

Thanks for the feedback. I think you had an early download, I updated the README with the phpLogCon password this morning after someone else told me about this problem. The user is "phplogcon", password "syslog". And as it looks, I have screwed up with the MySQL password, too and unfortunately I do not have this at hand. I'll look and let you know ASAP (but phpLogCon should work with the password I just gave).

I don't really need the root password at the moment, but in the future it's nice to put it in the README.

I owe you the MySQL root password: it is "phplogcon" too. I am right now working on an update to the appliance, and this time the README will have all the passwords

speaking of passwords....
I am german and I own a german keyboard.... I think it is a good idea to have initial passwords that
are invariant with kbd layouts (syslog e.g. is not).

I like this appliance very much and I hope I can contribute to it.

lol, I see what you mean The next version should already have "appliance" as user and password. Also, a keyboard-reconfigure dialog should start after login. I am just now busy with rsyslog and once this is done, I'll roll up a new version of the appliance. There are also some phpLogCon patches in the queue.

I'm Marco from Italy
I just discoverd syslog appliance, installed and tried it for 1 months.
I think it is a good product and I thanks you for great work.
Anyway I had some difficulties with it and now I would like to provide you a feedback requesting some new improvements.

Futures request:
1) keyboard layout setup (already requested by kschatt )
2) Support to more than one CPU.
I tried it with vmware server v1 and v2 but I haven't been able to add more than 1 CPU
2) Add some ESSENTIAL packages like
- dnsutils
- openssh-server
- openssh-server
Without dnsutil I wasn't able to execute commands like nslookup so...I was been forced to add ip's repository in /etc/hosts, add repositories in /etc/apt/source.list and than execute the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-get install dnsutils
apt-get install inetutils-ftp
apt-get install openssh-server
apt-get install openssh-client
I know your reasons maybe security and compactness but I think defaults configuration is too poor. Also because I think that beginners or non-unix experts would like to use your product because it is easy (just download,install and run) instead expert people (I'm not) probably would create their custom installion (maybe download rsyslog, phplogcon, mysql customized etc...). So providing commons basic packages could improve user's experience.

Please not that this is not a bad review but simply a suggestion. I thanks you for your good work!

ps: I also have some performance problems already exposed in the relative section of the forum so...when do you think a new version will be available? I'm looking forward to his arrival!!!!

Feedback is appreciated, but it is primarily a bugfixing release, which has a new phpLogCon release plus some issues fixed. So, for example, the console config is not yet part of it. I am a bit hesitant to do larger changes before the holidays, I have to admit...
