I spent over 4 hours trying to fix this error. I was searching for a million things other than the simple answer.

Is there someway I can re-pay you? My first child? Dinner? Drinks?

If anyone is still out there, I have a question:

I delete the registry keys fine, but whe i reboot and go into my connection properties, TCP/IP is still there! I go as if im going to reinstall on top of, but when i browse, i dont have an inf directory under te windows directory!

please help!

I, too, had this error on a Win XP system and tried both the Install C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf method and the netsh int ip reset [ log_file_name] method, after deleting the winsock and winsock2 registry keys. Neither method worked on the Dell desktop I was working on. The computer also gave "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" when IPCONFIG /RENEW was run. I wound up copying the winsock and winsock2 registry keys from my HP laptop to a floppy and installing them on the Dell desktop. Both systems were XP SP2. This worked. Hope this might help someone in the same bind.

If it is an XP system you are going to have to use the .inf file.
It will work like a charm

I haven't had this problem in the past but I was looking at the solution and can see that it would work. However, I'm also curious to find out if, rather than deleting the 2 registry setting and reinstalling TCP/IP, you were to reset the IP stack using the netsh command would it have the same results. If you would like to give it a shot and let us know it’s actually a quicker solution if it works.

The command is…

Netsh int ip reset logfile.txt

You have to put a logfile name, it dumps all the results of what it reset in this file.

Please let us know if it worked.

thank you very very much i was stuck for 2 hours with this, i thought it was pesky spyware, p2esocks , i guess ad aware was a bit OTT when it deleted some entires

Microsoft anti-spyware whacked the registry.

netsh int ip reset logifle.txt did not work for me,
but copying the registry keys from another XP box did the trick.

This thread was the only documentation I could find.
