Ability to specify custom SQL commands

Postby rgerhards on Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:35 am

Hi,

I have heard of potential use cases where it is desired to define a data source based on a custom SQL statement. As far as I can see, this seems to be useful and not too hard to implement.

My idea is that we add a third data source type: custom SQL statement. The driver would be very similar to the database driver. But instead of a table name, a SQL statement can be specified. The rest is almost the same, that is field names need to be specified as usual. The main difference is that the driver must not construct the full SQL statement. However, we must make sure that it is possible to add the where clauses we need for paging and any other thing that phpLogCon needs to do. I am not sure if some other driver functions are negatively affected, but to the best of my knowledge that should not be the case.

I'd appreciate feedback both from potential users of such a feature (what would you actually do?) as well as from the development team (why is it hard to implement, if so?).

Depending on feedback, I'll try to get this onto the phpLogCon schedule.

Thanks,
Rainer
